Italtile Commercial’s partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.

“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its

children” -Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

From humble beginnings in the dusty fields of Qunu in Eastern Cape, Nelson Mandela grew to become a wise and compassionate leader, admired and respected around the world for his integrity, wisdom and humility. Mandela is called the father of the nation, not only for his role in liberating South Africans but also for the love and support he has shown to children. Among many awards bestowed upon him after his long walk to freedom were The World’s Children’s Prize, received in 2005; and Decade Child Rights Hero 2009, to honour his lifelong struggle to free the children of South Africa from apartheid, and for his unwavering support for their rights.

 The last legacy project.

His love lives on, long after his passing, in a beautiful legacy embodied in the building of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital, a state-of-the-art paediatric facility in Parktown, Johannesburg. Designed to feel light, bright and less intimidating or frightening for children, the building features child-friendly art along the corridors, and several internal and external courtyards.

Mandela Month and the centenary year.

As we approach Mandela Month in this, his centenary year, we find ourselves reflecting back on the extraordinary vision that birthed the project, - Madiba’s last legacy project - and the build process that culminated in the arrival of the very first little patients in 2017. When we first heard that the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund was working with clinical consultants and a diverse architectural team - RI, JCA, GAPP Architects and Ruben Reddy Architects – to conceptualise a paediatric academic hospital in Johannesburg, we felt that it was our civic duty to reach out, and our privilege to serve the process in whatever way we could.

‘The NMCH vision is to be a state-of-the-art specialist paediatric academic and tertiary referral hospital providing child-centred, best-quality medical services to the children of Southern Africa, irrespective of their social or economic status.’

The brief: a 200-bed, 8-theatre hospital with state-of-the-art diagnostic capabilities, having the capability to expand in size to provide approximately 300 beds. The hospital shall accommodate tertiary and quarternary disciplines dealing with cardiovascular diseases, neurological diseases,  haematological and oncological diseases, endocrine and metabolic diseases, renal diseases, paediatric surgery and multiple system, gastrointestinal and respiratory diseases whilst supporting paediatric academic research and training.

 Meeting and exceeding clinical requirements.

For obvious reasons, clinical requirements are a great deal more rigorous than those of domestic or corporate environments; the sanitaryware, tapware and tiles that were required had to meet exacting standards. At Italtile Commercial, we have always believed that good enough isn’t good enough, so the products chosen for donation - Laufen sanitaryware, Idral taps, Ceramic Industries and Atlas Concorde tiles - not only met, but exceeded expectations.

82 975 high end tiles to cover 3 319 square metres. 94 basins. 14 special WCs. Top quality taps designed for users with reduced mobility. A total donation worth R3.5 million.

May our future generations ‘live beautifully’.

We are proud to have partnered with like-minded people on the project, knowing that our contribution has, in a small way, helped transform Mandela’s vision into an extraordinary, love filled facility. “Live Beautifully” is the cornerstone upon which we founded our business thinking, and integral to that, we believe, is access to the kind of world-class wellness offered by The Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital: the very best care, in the very best facilities, surrounded by the very best people.
