Create a beautiful modern family kitchen

If you had to dream up your ideal kitchen design, what would it look like? Would there be big, glossy counters, sparkling faucets and reflective tiles, or rustic cabinets, warm wood-look flooring and toasty lighting? Today, it’s possible to design the most beautiful kitchens, thanks to the amazing materials, talented designers and breathtaking technology available.

Being the center of your day-to-day living, your kitchen is the most important space in your home. Ideally, you start off your day with the smell of roasted coffee beans drifting from the kitchen and your family enjoys a wholesome breakfast and chat before heading out into the world outside of your home. You deserve a place of serenity, comfort and flawless style. Here are our tips for the ideal modern family kitchen:

Make function a top priority

We all know that the most exciting part of designing a kitchen is picking the colours, lighting, decorations and fancy appliances, but it’s important to ensure your kitchen is a practical shape, is easy to clean, has enough space for your appliances, sinks and other important elements and has enough room for you to move around in. Stick to a fundamental kitchen plan where your sink, cooktop and fridge form a triangle - this will ensure ease of movement.

Check out the Mira Smeg sink, ideal for modern, practical kitchens. The modern sink offers design beauty and functionality, thanks to the fitted glass cover plate.

Ensure spacious walkways

You don’t want to feel as though you have to squeeze through your kitchen walkways to get from one side to the other. Make sure your walkways are about 90 cm or so wide to allow enough room to manuva easily and not feel cramped in your kitchen.

Maximise safety

This is especially important if there are kids around the house. Usually, designing your cooking area so that you can easily overlook kids’ play areas will give you peace-of-mind while you’re busy in the kitchen. A few other important safety elements in the kitchen include slip resistant flooring - see Italtile’s Carpi Blanco Anti Slip Glazed Porcelain Tile - ovens that are out of reach for small children and corner protectors.

Measure your cabinets and worktops

Remember that you need room to open up cabinet doors freely without them bashing into walls or other doors - this is especially essential at kitchen corners.

When it comes to fitting appliances, you need to ensure two things:

  • There is enough space for them - in storage or on the countertop.
  • Your kids (if you have any) can reach them if need be. For example, if your kids need to make use of the microwave, they should be able to reach it without having to climb onto anything.

Lighten up your kitchen

Dark, dingy kitchens hold little appeal. Make sure you lighten up your kitchen by ensuring enough light comes in through the windows during the day and, if the space is small, consider installing glass doors and display shelving instead of heavy, closed off doors and cabinets. Glossy flooring and work surfaces also reflect light effectively, making your kitchen appear lighter and bigger.

Consider installing lighting strips with automatic sensors in draws and cabinets as well as LED lighting strips underneath work surfaces and shelving to brighten up your kitchen.

Install a kitchen island

Many interior trends come and go - but not the kitchen island! This is one of the most functional spaces you can have in your kitchen. You can use it to cook and eat on, and you’ll find it becomes a central point for family gatherings and socializing.

Use smart storage solutions

Don’t forget to make enough room for storage. These days, we have access to various smart storage solutions that maximize space and ensure a neater kitchen layout. Most appliances can be covered in integrated doors that match your cabinets. For example, you can hide your dishwasher in your cabinets. Other storage solutions include a built-in bin, classy spice racks and vertical wall storage (see example below).

Invest in a decent ventilator

No one enjoys standing in a hot, stuffy kitchen while preparing food. Buy a decent ventilation system to remove heat and cooking odours from your kitchen.
