Essential Element: An in-depth look at the ISYSTICK taps collection

What’s the Isystick range all about?

From the designer, Matteo Thun: “Less is better, least is best-the utmost formal simplification for the first mixing tap in the world made with vanishing technology.  Isy is a system that speaks the language of essentiality; it is not a design operation, but an idea designed by water.”

Zucchetti, has once again broken new ground with  the Isystick Tap Collection.  This revolutionary new design gives you a minimalist form never before thought possible.  Described as a cartridge that is concealed beneath the bench top or in the wall – what could be more avant garde in concept and challenging in feasibility? Zucchetti has achieved this: a design so radical from the status quo, that it is patented world-wide.

What are the different tap designs available from the collection?

The Isystick range consists out of a single lever basin mixer, a built-in single lever shower mixer and shower head with wall-mounted shower arm, and a free-standing single lever basin mixer as well as bath-shower mixer.  In the collection is also available a kitchen sink mixer, bidet mixer, tall basin mixer and even a wall mounted basin mixer

What advanced technology is used for the taps?

Isystick is the first real range of Zuchetti using a modular system for water control.  According to the designer, the Isystick tapware range is a reduction project which revolutionized the classical engineering design methods.  Simple essential lines make Isy a concentration of technology: the mixing water system, real tap’s engine, thanks to an International Zucchetti patent, is inserted below the surface of the basin, completely hiding the mechanical parts.

Eco-friendly range?

During the year 2011, the Isystick tapware range won an award for Green Product Design.

The goal behind this award is to bestow international recognition to those outstanding individuals, companies, organizations, governments, and institutions – together with their products, services, programs, ideas, and concepts-that have forwarded exceptional thinking and inspired greater progress toward a more healthier and more sustainable universe.

Green Good Design attempts to impact consumer habits, restructure manufacturing output, influence the design of cities and public spaces, and raise a consciousness about our limited global resources and the disappearance of clean air, clean earth, and clean water.

So there you have it, the Isystick tapware series is a simple, yet stylish range; and ultimately a revolutionary product designed with ‘eco-friendly’ in mind.

Far, far, away: An in-depth look at the FARAWAY washbasin collection

What’s the Faraway range all about?

The Faraway sanitary collection envisions the bathroom as a place for sensory experience, a real or virtual journey to self-discovery.

The squared form and rounded corners of the range meet in a sensual hybrid, expressing tactility and design.   By no coincidence has this vast and important collection been assigned to Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, designers who have brought about the greatest renovation in the iconography of contemporary bathrooms, especially through their creations designed for Zucchetti and Kos.  Once again, together, they reaffirm an unbeatable, multi-award-winning, internationally applauded team.

Faraway is the metaphor of a journey into real or virtual experiences, surpassing the ritual bathroom.   It is the most complete and complex bathroom collection ever developed to date using more than 10 different typologies of materials, 50 types of taps, 2 bathtubs, 3 washbasins, a concept spa, over 30 accessories and complementary items.  Each component of the collection was created with the logic to fulfill a wealth of functions, yet remain variable in their use and in form.

What are the different washbasin styles?

The Faraway range consists out of 3 washbasin designs: a single lever basin mixer without pop-up waste, a built-in single lever basin mixer and a free-standing single lever basin mixer.  All three designs are white, but the taps are manufactured in a white or silver finish.

What technology is used to give the washbasins that ‘silky’ tactility?

CRISTALPLANT© is a technologically advanced and unique compound, made up of a high percentage of mineral extenders from nature (ATH derived from bauxite) as well as a small one of high-pureness polyester and acrylic polymers; therefore, it is an inert, hypo-allergenic and non-toxic material.  This compound gives the surface of the basin its velvety and natural stone-like finish.

The processing technology is ‘cast moulding’ or low compression moulding.  A prototype in full scale is manufactured on the grounds of a 3D design, being then used for the making of a mould.
The mould, in compound material, can be produced following the traditional processing method (positive and negative) or with inserts driven by hydraulic rams.

Eco-friendly range?

CRISTALPLANT© is 100% recyclable, practically fireproof (class 1), strongly UV-resistant, solid and non-porous, hygienic and healthy, resistant and agreeable to the touch because of its silky surface, as mentioned before.

CRISTALPLANT© is also 100% restorable, i.e. it can bring back the original state and look by simply using an abrasive sponge and a detergent, thus removing even cigarette burnt rings.  These properties of durability and restorability make it an eco-compatible material.

So there you have it, the Faraway basin collection is perfect for those wanting to have a fresh, yet ambient look for their bathrooms.  Although only available in three designs, the shape and surface finish will compliment the rest of your bathroom furniture.

What’s the Laufen Pro sanitary ware range all about?Laufen Pro

The Laufen Pro Swiss designer Peter Wirz from the design group, Process Design, has created a bathroom series optimised to the requirements of the ceramic manufacturing process.  It proves that minimalist forms, high quality and optimum function need not come with a high price tag if they are cleverly produced.  The democratic design of Laufen Pro is the modern answer to the claim that everyone should have a right to good form.

Laufen Pro Double WashbasinWhat are the different Laufen Pro products?

The Laufen Pro A washbasins are available in 20 sizes, the majority of them being countertop or built-in versions, whereas the Laufen Pro B washbasins are only available in 12 sizes, either built-in or semi-built-in. The elegant shape of both the Pro A and B washbasins are striking, as are the raised rims in the case of the Laufen Pro B series. These are washbasins that make a good impression everywhere, and they are available in a large range of sizes and styles.  The Pro C, the compact series is designed to be used and implemented where space is very tight. This C series hardly protrude at all and therefore save valuable space. This is available in 6 different sizes and designs

The Pro series brings extreme functionality and clear aesthetics to the bathroom. The contemporary basins, toilets, and bidets fulfil different demands in elegant style.

Laufen Pro includes WCs and bidets for all situations – most of which function with an economical 4.5/3 L flush.  Particularly attractive is the new wall-hung WCs and bidets with concealed fixtures.

Simple traditional bathtub forms emanate a very special charm, just like Laufen Pro.  Based on a rectangle, these bathtubs introduce maximum function and clear-cut beauty into the bathroom. Laufen Pro series bathtubs are available in White or Pergamon, in four sizes and also with a whirlpool system.

With its clear timeless design, the Laufen Pro furniture collection exudes an air of order and clarity whilst providing plenty of storage space in the bathroom.  A common design and practical feature shared by the furniture elements is the integrated handle that avoids knocking oneself, whilst at the same time, creating extra space for users in front of the washbasin.

Laufen ProWhat design elements are used to create the simplistic, yet spatial effect?

The Laufen Pro range generally allows the realisation of design concepts even in the most cramped spaces.  Washbasins and WCs require little elbow room and thus save valuable space.  The WCs and Bidets also offer high convenience options for WC seats and covers – removable for easy cleaning, soft-closing, and an anti-bacterial surface finish.

The 12 washbasin variations in the Laufen Pro furniture sets are versatile, durable and highly practical.  Thanks to particularly scratch-, water- and UV-resistant furniture surfaces they are robust and easy to clean.  With a variable 3D fixing system, Laufen Pro furniture can also be effortlessly mounted on walls. Additional stability is supplied by aluminium feet if required.  Thanks to concealed predrilled holes, the practical hand towel rails at the side can also be mounted swiftly and easily.

The Laufen Pro vanity units are fitted with a space-saving siphon.  This dispenses with the need for siphon cut-outs in drawers, recovering valuable storage space, a Laufen exclusive.  The integrated soft-close mechanism and exclusive fittings ensure that drawers and doors always close gently and quietly.

Eco-friendly sanitary ware range?

The Swiss Q-Plus symbol certifies compliance of the Laufen Pro collection with the European standard and established, higher Swiss standard.  This is an important aspect for Laufen, as only enduring, low-wear products deserve to be called environmentally-friendly. After all, avoidance comes before recycling.

This collection helps consumers to live in harmony with the environment and reduce energy costs. All products feature the latest energy- and water-efficient technologies and the newest generation of water-efficient WCs.

So there you have it. The Laufen Pro bathroom collection is the A, B, and C of sanitary ware. Every April, over 300 000 visitors beat a path to the Salone, testifying to the quality of the array of goods on offer and to the exhibition organisation.  The 51st edition will be no exception.  Right here “Milan, where else?” – as the publicity campaign for this year’s Salone proudly proclaims.

The myriad proposals from the about 2,500 exhibitors range from furniture to furnishing accessories, from kitchens to bathrooms to the prototypes conceived by the under 35s, all bearing the distinguishing hallmarks of quality and innovation.

The Salone – which will take 209,000 square metres of exhibition space at the Fairgrounds, with the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, EuroCucina /The International Kitchen Furniture Exhibition, the International Bathroom Exhibition, the International Furnishing Accessories Exhibition, and Salone Satellite – are set to take off with the confidence that has always marked them out, and bolstered by the terrific exhibitor uptake that has already caused the entire space to be sold out.

Last year’s edition was attended by 282 483 trade operators, 177 964 of whom came from 154 countries; 32 870 members of the general public and 5 967 communications operators.  This year promises to have even more operators, as well as visitors.

An in-depth look at the INTENSITY & MILESTONE porcelain stoneware tile range

What’s the Intensity & Milestone porcelain stoneware tile range all about?

Intensity tiles are white body tiles and are predominantly used as wall tiles, whereas the Milestone tile collection is porcelain stoneware coloured in body, used for both the floor and wall.

The collections are both monocaliber, which means that all the colours in each tile collection are produced to the exact size, opening up the possibility of combining sizes and colours in the same tile pattern.

The term “rectified” refers to a dimensionally stable tile and is used to describe a porcelain tile that is consistent in its dimensions.  This is due to the fact that sheets of porcelain are cut after being fired.  Because a rectified porcelain tile is more consistent in size, it is very easy to decorate with. Complicated tile work is more easily achieved with this type of tile, as well as thinner grout lines.

What are the different Intensity & Milestone tile styles?

The Intensity tile collection can be obtained in eight different colour ranges (Aurora, Sea, Sky, Lime, Honey, Cocoa, Love and Sunset) and is manufactured using a shiny surface finish.  The collection is only available in one size, 30.5×91.5 cm, and has a thickness of 11.5 mm.

The Milestone tile collection is available in four different colour ranges (Alaska, Canyon, Desert & Cliff).  Unlike the Intensity tile, the Milestone range is manufactured using one of three surface finishes; matt, honed and textured; and it is produced in four different sizes (60×60 cm, 30×60 cm, 45×45 cm and 30×30 cm).  The 60×60 cm and 30×60 cm tile sizes have a thickness of 10mm and the remaining two tile sizes have a thickness of 9.5mm.

What technology is used to achieve the desired effect on the two collections?

Amongst the most evolved in the global ceramic tile industry, Atlas Concorde’s production technology is the result of constant research and development.  In its 40-year history the company has actively contributed towards the evolution of ceramic tiles, introducing artistic and technological innovations onto the market, contributing towards giving the phrases “Made in Italy” real meaning across the world.

Today the company can guarantee impeccable technical features for every single ceramic collection and is able to offer evolved products, such as slim thickness ceramic slabs, and complete design solutions for specific architectural needs, such as raised floors and ventilated walls.

Eco-friendly tile range?

All porcelain stoneware products in the Atlas Concorde range carry Ecolabel certification, the European mark of environmental quality, that certifies compliance with European environmental regulations and is only awarded to products that have a low environmental impact.

Ecolabel is a quality award that identifies and promotes the most eco-friendly products.  In fact, the environmental criteria evaluate the impact on the entire lifecycle: extraction of raw materials, manufacturing, distribution, use and final disposal.  Atlas Concorde was one of the first ceramic tile producers to obtain the Ecolabel quality mark.

The Intensity & Milestone tile collections complete our discussion on tile ranges available at all the Italtile branches.  Due to the top quality technical features of the two ranges, the collections are suitable not only for home or office spaces, but also specifically for the hospitality industry. Many hotels, resorts, restaurants, wellness spas, etc. make use of these collections because of their complicated architectural design.

Dare to be different: An in-depth look at the FLAG tile collection

What’s the Flag tile range all about?

Simplicity is seen as the starting point, originality as the objective and diversity as the tool to be used to achieve the objective.  This slogan defines the Flag tile collection from Italian manufacturer, Ceramica Castelvetro.

The latest tile design trends return to the search for peculiarity, exclusivity and uniqueness starting from the transformation of simple materials.  This demonstrates that it is not matter itself which creates value, but rather its passage from one state to another.

The value of synthetic stone lies neither in the material from which it is inspired: stone, nor in the material from which it is made:porcelain. The real value lies in the passage through which porcelain starts to represent stone, meaning its ability to always be different. Diversity is therefore the tool used by porcelains to transform into stone, to create a unique, original and absolutely creative element: flag, quarry stone tiles.

What are the different Flag tile styles?

The Flag tile collection is manufactured in four different colours and sizes. The colours are Dark, Grey, Gold and White, while the sizes range from 50.2 x 50.2 m, 33.3 x 50.2 m, 33.3 x 33.3 m and 16.4 x 16.4 m. The lifestyle images included in this article depicts how the tile range will look like in different settings using different combinations of sizes.

What technology is used to achieve the ‘diverse’ effect?

Flag tiles are manufactured using avant-garde technologies.  Ceramica Castelvetro consistently introduces new technologies to manufacture its tile products, which are aimed at minimizing the use of energy resources and offering the best possible working conditions.

Eco-friendly tile range?

Ceramica Castelvetro’s “green” philosophy has deep roots.  This philosophy forms the basis of the company’s values, their work and workforce, but above all it shows in the company’s technologies and their different tile products, right from the start.

The company’s ceaseless striving towards a more and more perfect industrial eco-compatibility, through research into sustainable technological development, has been rewarded with the Ecolabel trademark.

On numerous Castelvetro tile products, currently undergoing certification, the European “flower” trademark for ecological quality of a product will appear, demonstrating the company’s long-standing ecological sensitivity and guaranteeing the consumer exact eco-sustainable characteristics in the production processes that generated them.   In the simple image of the flower, the whole Castelvetro experience is condensed, the result of years of work and dedication towards safeguarding the environment and energy-saving.

Although a simple design, Flag tiles are ideal for spaces that portray a sense of individualism and originality. Diversity is used to manufacture every single tile in the most innovative and unique manner possible with ground-breaking ceramic technologies. Flag, forms part of the trend of Earth Living through Italtile and can be used to create truly natural spaces.

Coming up:

Have a look at our next segment where we will be discussing our last two tile ranges, Intensity and Milestone, from Italian manufacturer, Ceramica Atlas Concorde.  The ranges were developed using a modern approach, researching the latest trends in ceramic design and keeping up to date with shifts in technology and consumer taste.

Mad about Marble: An in-depth look at the I Marmi Italiani tile range

What’s the I Marmi Italiani tile range all about?

Travertino, Statuario, Marfil.  The through colour body porcelain I Marmi Italiani tile collection draws inspiration from these three magnificent marbles.  With great attention to detail, the stone look is perfectly replicated to give charm and naturalness to these ceramic slab tiles designed for exclusive spaces and atmospheres.

What are the different I Marmi Italiani tile styles?

I Marmi Italiani tiles are ‘state-of-the-art’ in nature, and can be used both for floor and wall application in every project context.  The tile collection is manufactured in five different sizes with different surface finishes making this range especially versatile.  The styles in which they are manufactured include Travertino (Avorio, Beige & Grigio), Marfil (Avorio & Beige) and Statuario, each with its own sophisticated character.

With regards to wall applications, both in small private spaces and in large public rooms, these ceramic tiles are the ideal.  The tiles are elegant, functional, very easy to clean, can be laid effortlessly and do not require any special maintenance.

The I Marmi Italiani tile collection recreates the most classic of materials with new variations that can combine with indoor design and last generation items, marrying the timeless to the contemporary seamlessly.

What technology is used to achieve the ‘marble’ tile effect?

The I Marmi Italiani tile collection is part of the ‘Supernatural’ project that assembles the newest ranges of Sant’Agostino products, manufactured by using the innovative digital ink-jet printing system.

This technology, developed for the ceramic industry, offers unlimited opportunities for reproducing images on ceramic tiles with absolutely natural aesthetic results, as the I Marmi Italiani range proves. These images show that the digital printing system makes it possible to manufacture an unlimited number of different (and varied) tiles of the same nature, as if it is genuine stone.

Even in the case of particularly marked reliefs on the tile surfaces, these are perfectly defined by the printing technology, decorating the tile from one edge to the other.  The technology also allows for any kind of nuance, shade or tone reproduction on the tiles that draw inspiration from natural stones.

The visual perception of lifestyle spaces are amplified and enhanced by combining the digital print technology with the Krystal polishing effect, as discussed in our previous article.  This polishing effect gives the tile that extra “je ne sais quoi”.

Eco-friendly tile range?

As with the other Sant’ Agostino tile collections, the I Marmi Italiani range is 100% environmentally-friendly.  The tile range carries the European Union Eco-label, makes use of renewable energy sources in its manufacturing process, contributes to LEED certification points and holds a product certification for eco-friendly building standards.

Even the digital printing system, mentioned before, is also a technology respectful of the environment.  The inks are used at 100% efficiency without producing polluting waste.

As can be seen, the I Marmi Italiani tile range exemplifies practicality and functionality through its simple, elegant applications.  Marble, produced in different styles, is the signature of this tile collection, making it the ideal tile for modern homes, businesses and other related spaces.

Coming up:

In our next article, we will be looking at another Italian tile manufacturer, Ceramica Castelvetro.  The collection we will be focusing on is the Flag tile range, its design known for its uniqueness and originality.

Back to ancient times: An in-depth look at the LUXOR porcelain tile range

What‘s the Luxor tile range all about?

Poise.  Exclusivity.  Charm.  These evocative words can all be used to describe the Luxor porcelain tile range designed specifically to enhance the sophistication of any space.  This magnificent range puts a contemporary approach on the elegance of marble and the expressive richness of a timeless stone with a scent of the Orient: alabaster.

The Luxor tile range, also manufactured by Ceramica Sant’ Agostino, brings back an element of ancient history to the porcelain tile industry.  The precious materials (stone, alabaster and opulent marble) used in ancient tile-making processes are recalled in this line.  Every effort has been made to recreate these timeless materials in high fidelity using the very best technology, leaving its natural beauty unaltered.

The range is extremely versatile and care is given to every last detail.  The Luxor range can be used as both a floor tile and wall tile, and gives a special character to any environment, interacting in a unique way with the most elegant pieces of furniture.

What are the different Luxor tile styles?

As in the case of the Pearl tile, Luxor is also manufactured in four different styles: Grey, Brown, Ivory and Beige.  Each tile style portrays a specific colour scheme.  What contributes to the exclusivity of the Luxor tile range is the fact that it’s primarily an indoor tile which can be used to compliment just about any rich and sophisticated interior space.

What technology is used to achieve the ‘ancient’ effect?

Unlike the Pearl tile range, Luxor porcelain tiles are manufactured with the use of KRYSTAL technology.

KRYSTAL stands for a tile created with an ultra new concept, developed at Ceramica Sant’Agostino’s research centre, which results in a superior polished effect, both with regards to the product’s technical properties and its appearance.  Unlike traditional polishing methods, which subject the natural surface of a normal tile to an abrasive polishing process, the KRYSTAL system involves the polishing of a specially engineered tile by incorporating glass glazes on its surface before the firing process begins.

KRYSTAL technology increases the tile’s resistance to stains, acids and wear for a high-performance tile surface that is easy to maintain, even when placed in the most challenging usage environments.

Eco-friendly tile range?

Indeed.  The Luxor tile range carries the Ecolabel, LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) and EnvironmenTile certifications, making it an exceptional environmentally-friendly porcelain tile range.

So for all you Roman emperors and Greek goddesses, the Luxor tile range will most definitely appeal to you.  Elegance and sophistication defines this tile range, accompanied with a hint of charm and absolute poise.

Coming up:

The next tile range we’ll be discussing is the I Marmi Italiani, an absolute must-have for marble tile fanatics.

Earth Living: An in-depth look at the PEARL porcelain tile collection

What’s the Pearl tile range all about?

The Pearl porcelain tile range is a collection reflecting subtle complexity in terms of design and has been conjured from a brand new and attractive mixture of technique and creativity, infusing the all natural style of hassle free Earth Living.

The range is characterized by the elegant marble design used on the tile’s porcelain surface, and is produced using strong, bold indications of alabaster mixed with other elements. These elements are obtained through an in-depth study of various natural materials that lend themselves to transposition in tiles and ceramics including materials as diverse as timeless antique wood!

What are the different Pearl tile styles?

The Pearl range is produced in four different natural styles, namely Silver, Almond, Forest and Camel.  Each style name naturally reflects the colour and tones of the tile, making selection that much more convenient.  The range is suitable for any area indoors or outdoors, and especially if the theme is Earth Living.

What technology is used to achieve the ‘natural’ effect in the tiles?

The seemingly perfect, natural look on each tile style is obtained by using Digital Print Technology of the absolutely highest standards. The use of this technology ensures a striking and completely authentic aesthetic result on the ceramic surface, which is then further enhanced with a satin finish.

Each tile surface differs from the other, contributing to the sophistication and naturalness of this range. More or less a hundred different veined patterns for each tile style are produced and then mixed, making every single tile completely unique further enhancing the quality of natural Earth Living.

Eco-friendly tile range?

Pearl tiles are manufactured using a minimum of 20% recycled materials. The manufacturing company, Ceramica Sant’ Agostino, prides itself in producing high quality tiles whilst adhering to the strict European and International regulations to protect the environment, as well as end-users looking to reduce their ecological footprint.

In addition to environmentally sound manufacturing techniques, Pearl tiles do not contribute to change the energy balance of the environments where they are installed and do not produce any Urban Heat Island Effect, thanks to their very good SRI-Solar Reflectance Index of ≥ 29.  This allows the tile range to be used outdoors in both covered and non-covered areas.

So there you have it, if you’re looking for that natural atmosphere and you’re ecologically aware, the Pearl collection is perfect for Earth Living in spaces both indoors and outdoors.

Coming up:

Look out for our next segment where we will be highlighting the exciting, opulent Luxor range of porcelain tiles designed to bring that touch of timeless, ancient charm to any environment.
